Snackpack Program Looking for Volunteers -
Irmo attorney Jake Moore, on behalf of Irmo Arbor Day Committee, says that the committee has been asked to help with the SNACKPACK Program in Lexington-Richalnd District Five. Jake says friend Stuart Stout is head of the SNACKPACK Program and has dedicated hundreds of hours to help feed hungry children in the district. Last year, 467 District 65 students took home a SNACKPACK on Fridays. Theses students are designated by social workers as the ones most likely not to get enough to eat on the weekends when they don't get breakfast and lunch at school. Each SNACKPACK contains at least 16 non perishable food items and costs about $5. Also, last Christmas the program gave over 200 families a box of food valued at a minimum of $40. They gave almost 200 families those boxes again in June, July and August. The task wouldn't be accomplished without food and financial contributions from the entire community. They have the five food drives planned by local grocery stores this fall and Ameris Bank will match every item we put in their bank for October. Students are asked to volunteer to work at any of these food drives, handing out shopping lists in front of the stores. Customers drop off the items on their way out. Each food drive will be held Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. The volunteers work 2 and 1/2 hour shifts. For details please call Stuart at 781-7330, 447-3066 or email him at stwartstout@att.net.
